footsteps Tips for Happy Scoring

We've scored many cricket matches before and we have some tips:

  1. Before you come to the ground, print out the QR codes to hand to players and spectators. If you bring them, someone else can walk around and hand them out. Then everyone can watch your live scoring action.

  2. Arrive at the game 30 minutes early. Figure out where the sun is going to be for the next few hours, find any useful shade, and setup your chair, table, and pergola if you've got one.
  3. Bring a power bank. It can be stressful watching your battery icon look empty.
  4. Ask the opposide team for their scorer. Also, start asking for their team sheet. Whilst you can add players during the match it is much more pleasant to enter both team's players before they head out on to the field.
  5. As soon as possible, ask the teams to toss a coin or bat, and to choose who is batting first. This is good for both teams, and for you.
  6. Announce to both teams that play starts in 10 minutes. It's probably not your job, but we'll be here all day if they don't start on time.
  7. Once the players and umpires are on the field, the umpire will call "scorers ready?"
  8. In the unlikely event that you have time to spare before the game starts, perhaps tell the other scorer a joke. "Knock knock", "Who's there?", T', "T' who?", "T'who for twenty t'who. What a catch!" Everyone loves a reference to the 12th Man albums. Well done.
  9. If you don't know the players' names, just yell out, "Bowler's name?"
  10. If you or the other scorer fall behind, or make a mistake, it is ok to ask play to stop.

Have a great day at the cricket!
